Father’s Day – A Long Time Coming
The idea for Father’s Day was initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington in June 1910 to honor her Civil War veteran father. While Mother’s Day was already widely celebrated in the United States, Sonora felt that fathers also deserved recognition, inspired by her own father who had raised six children as a single dad after her mother had died in childbirth. Soon after proposing her idea to the local YMCA, the first Father’s Day was commemorated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.
Although Catholic countries in Europe have recognized their own version of Father’s Day since the Middle Ages, it took America a while to catch up. The idea to create a nationally recognized day was brought before the U.S. Congress in 1916, but it did not gain momentum until later in the 20th century when Father’s Day finally became an official national holiday in 1972.
