This month marks the 100th year anniversary of women receiving full rights of citizenship – and most importantly, the right to vote. Thanks to a small but determined group of women who gathered in New York in 1848, the seeds of the Women’s Suffrage Movement were first planted, culminating in the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920.

Orlando’s own artisan coffee roaster Javatino raises a cup to these brave women who paved the way for future female Supreme Court justices, astronauts, entrepreneurs, political leaders – and yes, coffee growers and traders.

The backbone of the Coffee Industry

The coffee industry is no exception when it comes to women claiming their rightful place in society and in the workplace. Typically considered a male-dominated industry, women actually makeup around 70 percent of the coffee industry workforce throughout the world – and are slowly gaining recognition for their crucial role in the industry.

The International Women’s Coffee Alliance (ICWA) was formed in 2003 to empower and recognize the participation of women in all facets of the global coffee industry. Just as the Fair Trade movement has worked to guarantee the highest standard of fair wage and labor practices, the ICWA works to ensure women in the industry achieve sustainable lives for their families and communities.

Committed to the Cause

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of their coffee’s origins and production processes. As the first USDA Certified Organic coffee roaster in Orlando, Javatino is committed to delivering the freshest organic and ethically sourced coffee to our customers.

Take our Single Origin Colombia Organic coffee, for example. Coming to you directly from Colombia’s Cesar and Magdalena coffee-growing region, this delicious coffee features hints of milk chocolate, and is produced from cherries that were hand pulped by the local indigenous Arhuaco People.

The region’s local Association of Indigenous Agroecology Producers was formed by Aurora Izquierdo, one of the first Arhuaco women to leave her Colombian village to pursue a higher education, before she returned home to establish a sustainable agricultural program. Kudos to Aurora and the countless women who are improving the lives of women and their communities in coffee-growing regions around the world.
