What Is Chemex?

Chemex is one of the older ways to brew coffee. This brew is special since the filter that is used is about three times as thick as those used with most other brews. This means less fatty oils, giving the coffee a smoother texture and purer flavor. Although many will argue that the best coffee brewing method is subjective, the Chemex makes for a superior alternative in most cases.

Why Is Chemex Better?

The Chemex method produces better coffee due to the use of its unique shape design and filter. The all-glass design removes the risk of other flavors contaminating the coffee, making it so you are only tasting 100% coffee.  It produces a less bitter, more smoother cup of coffee. It allows people to taste the subtle flavors without having to work through a thick, heavy cup of coffee. All in all, it offers a much more heightened coffee experience to your guests without any significant tradeoffs.

Benefits Of Chemex:

  • Cleaner, Better Tasting Coffee
  • Short Brewing Time
  • Easy Cleaning

What About The Grind And Roast?

You’ll want to use a coarser grind due to the Chemex’s filter slow down and rate of extraction. It is this longer extraction that produces the greater flavor than a regular, standard drip brew.  Too fine of a grind will cause over-extraction. You’ll want to adjust the grind based on the serving size and amount of coffee.

Chemex models can vary depending on how many people you plan on serving. It is ideal to have 2 models on board – 1 for single serves and 1 for multiple serves, which can range from anywhere between 3 to 10 cups.

We actually offer a Chemex 6 Cup Model that comes with 100 Chemex Filters that you can pick up here.

As for roasts, you’ll want to go with something that’s light to medium. Here are some of the Javatino blends that work best with Chemex:
