Traveling outside of our geographical comfort zone can bring unexpected joys and discoveries. Capturing the sun setting behind an ancient temple at just the right moment, enjoying a memorable local encounter, or savoring an unforgettable meal. All these experiences can open our minds to new ideas and enriching experiences. As American poet and humorist Oliver Wendell Holmes described, “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”

Coffee Tourism – Expanding the Cultural Experience

Just as farm-to-table has revolutionized how we choose our food, coffee tourism can provide a window into the origins of your cup of coffee. Avid travelers and coffee enthusiasts may want to consider combining their passions by seeking out destinations that now offer tours to local coffee farms in conjunction with touring more traditional sites.

And as travelers continue to pursue more sustainable and authentic experiences, they will be gratified to know they are also helping sustain local traditions and employment.

Ethiopia – the Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia may not be the first country that comes to mind while sipping your daily cup, but it is considered the birthplace of coffee. The first Arabica coffee beans were cultivated by Ethiopians in the early 15th century, several centuries after native coffee plants were discovered in the Ethiopian highlands. Since then, Ethiopia has become the fifth-largest coffee producer in the world.

During an Ethiopian coffee tour, you can enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony with local farmers. After the beans are roasted and ground before guests, the coffee is brewed in a clay pot and served as a sign of friendship and hospitality.

No need to travel further than Javatino to create your own Ethiopian coffee experience! We are pleased to offer Ethiopia Organic coffee as one of our select Single Origin coffees. Grown in the nation’s Yirgacheffe region at altitudes of around 6,000 feet, this Certified Organic light roast coffee has a tea-like essence with complex citrus and floral notes. It’s also Fair Trade Certified™, meaning Javatino is living up to its commitment to support our farmers and their communities with a fair wage and favorable working conditions.

Brazil’s Coffee Reigns Supreme

Ethiopia may be considered the birthplace of coffee, but in the world of coffee, Brazil is king! The first coffee crop was introduced to the country in the 1700s, and by the 1840s Brazil had become the world’s leading producer and exporter of coffee.

Get a taste of the history of the Brazilian coffee industry by getting up close and personal with coffee farmers. Tours are available throughout the famous Minas Gerais coffee-growing region located in southeastern Brazil. Explore the coffee route to discover the local history and coffee culture.

Javatino is proud to have a long-standing relationship with coffee farmers and exporters in the Minas Gerias region who are dedicated to producing the highest quality, organically grown and Fair Trade Certified™ coffee products. As Orlando’s original USDA Certified Organic coffee roaster, you should expect nothing less!
